Easter Basket Update

Filed under: Buffalo Food Shelf — Angela @ 8:21 am

The Zion Congregation contributed 1,382 pounds of food and $550 in cash to the Food Shelf to provide an Easter Meal for people in need in the Buffalo community.  This can feed a meal to approximately 550 needy people.   It was extremely gratifying to see the families that came and got involved with this project.  The kids got a chance to help fill the bags and also got a tour and explanation of the workings of the Food Shelf. We thank all the volunteers and their families for decorating the bags, filling the bags, and helping with the distribution.  This is a tremendous accomplishment and we can all be very proud.  Stay tuned for future opportunities on how we can continue to do more activities to aid these needy people in our community.Thank you, Roger and Sandy Brenny

Thank You for Supporting our Church Troops!

Filed under: Support Our Troops — Angela @ 2:57 pm

Troop PackagesThank you to everyone who brought in donations and contributed money towards the Troop Care Packages. Thank you also for the prayers you have offered up for these men and women. A 40 Days of Community Small Group collected, packaged and sent 10 care packages to our Zion Troops serving in active duty away from home (most serving in Iraq.) Additionally, they were able to send 4 more care packages to these soldiers with the request that they pass the care package on to a fellow soldier of their choosing. On behalf of our troops — thank you for the care packages, prayers and for thinking of us!

Easter Basket Update

Filed under: Buffalo Food Shelf — Angela @ 8:54 am

Zion has taken on the challenge of filling and distributing 180 Easter Dinner Baskets for the Buffalo Food Shelf to be given out in our community. It’s a big job but I believe a church like ours should be able to do it. Most of the bags have already been ‘decorated’ by the Sunday School kids and Barb’s group is doing 25 bags so we will be set on this. The Easter Card to be placed in each bag is also being done.

The problem is that we only have less than two weeks to finish collecting the food and we are a long way from our goal. Here is what we have so far:
Instant potatoes—need 180—have 13
Gravy mix—need 360—have 21
Green Beans—need 180—have 40
Jell-o—need 180—have 29
Fruit—need 180—have 32
Dessert mixes—need 180—have 23
There are 4 shopping carts placed around Zion for the food.

We also need donations of money to help purchase hams.

We are asking for volunteers to help complete the assembly of the bags at the Food Shelf (put in the hams, bread, etc) on Wed 3/19
We need 3 shifts of people:
1:00 to 2:30pm
2:30 to 4:30pm
4:30 to 6:30pm
There is a sign up sheet in the narthex or you can contact us to let us know that you can help – Sandy and Roger Kath Brenny – 682-2979 or Dave and Linda Nerothin – 417-9168.

Buffalo Public Library

Filed under: Buffalo Public Library — Angela @ 2:05 pm

No one has contacted the Buffalo Public Library. Anyone who is willing to give of his/her them is encouraged to call Amy Wittmann at 682-2753. As with many businesses, their budget is tight and staff is over extended. Our help will enable the library to better serve our growing community.

Marie and John Wright’s Group

Filed under: Buffalo Food Shelf, Park View Care Center, Small Groups — Angela @ 2:04 pm

We decided on visiting nursing homes as our mission project — no money involved and our group of older folks could visit on their schedule and perhaps team up with Marie and myself. Marie and I have already started our visitations. Idellla mentioned that her group had decided to assist the Food Shelf and we will assist with that Mission project as well.

Idella is now in California and Marie and I will take the entire two groups for the next two Wednesdays and she will be back to take the final meeting as Marie and I will be gone on a trip that last session.

We like the people and the material and are getting along fine.

Karen Mattson’s Group

Filed under: Miscellaneous Projects, Small Groups, Support Our Troops — Angela @ 11:45 am

Our small group is working on two projects right now:

1) Care packages to send to Zion troops–this has been publicized, but now donations have been received to date that we are aware of. Based on the “desirable items” list, one of our group members will be purchasing items for these care packages and the group will finance it. Any additional donations of goods or $ will be used either to supplement these packages or to provide additional packages for each of our troops to share with a buddy. We will have a table at the Ministry Fair this Sunday with a sample care package already assembled.

2)Food for Friends–Julie Kabe will coordinate group members in various capacities with this project. Members may provide a meal to a family in need, help package leftover food from Wednesday night suppers, or be involved in restocking the Zion freezer with meals for members.

(We got so involved in discussing these projects at our last meeting that we didn’t get around to discussing the topic for the week. Guess we’ll have to cover extra ground this week.(:-))

Karen Swenson’s Group

We delivered 48 Valentine’s bags to the residents at Park Lane Appartments.
Last week we each brought a bag of diapers for Love, Inc., and are trying to find a date for bringing a meal to Timber Bay as well as donations to the Easter Food Shelf Bags.

Things are going great and our group is having fun.

Buffalo Food Shelf Easter Basket Report

Filed under: Buffalo Food Shelf — Angela @ 3:54 pm

One group has offered to make the 180 Easter cards needed and coordinate decorating the bags.

One 40 day group that has volunteered to decorate 25 of the 180 bags and we are seeing if we can get the Sunday school pupils to decorate the balance. If not, we will be asking other groups to help.

Carol Elliot and Steve Peterson’s group has taken a collection, so far over $300 has been collected to help buy hams.

One other small group is considering the food shelf as their project.

We have 3 volunteers to date to help fill the bags on 3/17 and 3/18 and help transport them from the church to the food shelf. Could use more help here.

Four shopping carts have been borrowed from Cub Foods and placed in church with signs and shopping lists on them.

Dates to assemble the baskets are March 18th (not sure of the time yet) and delivery is scheduled for March 19th at the Food Shelf between 1pm and 6:30pm.

Grocery items needed for the baskets can be brought to the church by 3/9 and placed in the shopping carts that are set up throughout the church.:

  • 180 boxes of instant mashed potatoes
  • 180 cans of green beans
  • 180 cans of fruit
  • 180 boxes of Jello
  • 360 cans or packets of gravy
  • 180 dessert mixes i.e. bars, brownies, etc.

Other needs are

  • Over $600 needed to purchase hams
  • Helpers needed to sort, tally and fill bags
  • Helpers needed to deliver baskets
